A Russian plane carrying six people crashed in Afghanistan on Sunday, January 21, 2024. The plane, a Tupolev Tu-204, was en route from Moscow to Kabul when it crashed in the mountains near the city of Mazar-i-Sharif.

There were no survivors. The six people on board included four Afghan citizens, one Russian citizen, and one citizen of another country. The Afghan citizens were all women and children who were at risk of persecution by the Taliban. The Russian citizen was a diplomat who was working in Afghanistan. The citizen of the other country was a journalist who was covering the war in Afghanistan.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation. However, officials believe that bad weather may have been a factor. The plane was flying in heavy fog at the time of the crash.

The crash is a major tragedy for those who were on board. It is also a blow to the efforts to evacuate people from Afghanistan. The Taliban has made it increasingly difficult for people to leave the country, and this crash makes it even more difficult.
