FOA News – Israel recently said it had just carried out an airstrike in Gaza targeting a senior Hamas commander, but it was unclear whether this person had been killed or not.

Israeli military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said in a press conference that. The attack occurred “between Saturday and Sunday” at an underground compound in central Gaza, near the Nuseirat refugee camp.

The compound was used by two high-ranking members of the organization, including Marwan Issa, Mohammed Deif’s deputy, who was accused of being the “architect” of the unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7 last year. Mr. Hagari emphasized.

According to Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, Mr. Issa was also one of the planners of the attack on Israel by Hamas on October 7 last year that killed 1,200 people. Palestinian militants also held about 250 hostages, dozens of whom were released during a week-long truce last November. Israel believes 99 hostages are still alive in Gaza and 31 are dead.

Deif heads Hamas’s notorious armed wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, while Issa is his deputy.

“We are still checking the results of the airstrike and cannot yet make a final confirmation,” Mr. Hagari said in a statement on the first day of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

In December, the European Union imposed sanctions on Issa and Deif. In January, the country added political leader of the Islamic movement in Gaza Yahya Sinwar to a similar sanctions list. Israeli officials also accused Sinwar of being the leading mastermind of the October 7 attack.

A US Department of Defense official at the time confirmed that Israel carried out that attack.

Earlier on Monday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel was on its way to achieving “complete victory” in the war with Hamas.

According to the Ministry of Health in the territory run by Hamas, Israel’s relentless military campaign to destroy Hamas has killed at least 31,112 people in Gaza.
