The Fighter Bomber account of a Russian fighter pilot today posted a video from an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Shows the moment a series of FAB-500 bombs, fitted with the Unified Lifting and Guidance Module (UMPK), crashed into the “Ukrainian army’s weapons warehouse and ammunition depot” near the city of Vovchansk in Kharkov province.

In the video, at least two bombs crashed into the warehouse area and created a violent explosion. The third bomb exploded in the air, sending a shock wave and a series of shrapnel into the area below. “The bomb detonated right in the air because it hit the debris that had been thrown up before. This is a very rare incident,” the pilot said.

FAB-500 is a conventional bomb with a mass of 500 kg, packed with powerful explosives equivalent to 300 kg of TNT. This type of bomb is capable of causing damage within a radius of 250 m, specializing in destroying unprotected or thinly armored targets.

UMPK includes a GLONASS satellite navigation device and control system to significantly increase accuracy, along with lifting wings that allow the bomb to fly farther than the original. This is a similar plan to the US JDAM-ER line, helping to turn conventional bombs into smart bombs, instead of having to produce specialized, high-cost guided bombs.

Vadym Skibitsky, deputy head of the General Directorate of Defense Intelligence of Ukraine, commented that Russia has not repeated the trend of attacking energy infrastructure, instead focusing on defense industrial facilities.
